A Simple Thing
by
Sharon R. Mills
It was just a tree, one simple little tree,
similar to all the rest.
“Eat from it,” said the serpent, that deceitful serpent,
“It will probably taste the best.”
It was just a tree, one simple little tree,
When God put it there with the rest.
“Don’t eat from it,” said He, “If you truly love me,
honor me and pass the test.”
It was just a day, one simple little day,
A reflection of the Son.
“Don’t keep it,” said the world, the Christian world,
“Another day is really the one.”
It was just a day, one simple little day,
but God says, “It’s still the best.”
“Keep it,” said He, “if you really trust me,
and pass this one last test.”
It was just one life, one simple little life
But Christ lived it like no other.
“Don’t do it,” said the serpent. “Don’t die for the world,
it’s not worth your bother.”
It was just one life, one simple little life,
But He gave it up for me.
“Don’t do it,” I cried. But if He hadn’t died,
it would have ended all hope for me.
A tree. A day. A life.
Simple things, that’s true.
But once sin entered in, if Christ didn’t win,
Your life and mine would have been through.
It’s a simple thing, such a simple thing,
to choose where we wish to be.
Such a simple choice, but an important choice.
one we must make for eternity.
